DHAKA, Bangladesh: Jahurul Islam, district administrator of northern Panchagarh, Bangladesh, has confirmed that a boat carrying Hindu devotees sank in his district on September 26, killing at least 25 people, while dozens more are missing.
The accident is the country's worst waterways disaster in more than a year.
"So far, the deaths included 12 women and eight children. The rescue operation for those missing is ongoing," Islam said, adding that the ferry was transporting mostly devotees to a Hindu temple on the occasion of the Mahalaya holiday.
Islam stressed that he did not know the exact number of people missing, but passengers said more than 70 people had been on the boat which sank in the Karatoya river, adding that a committee was formed to investigate.
While some of the passengers managed to swim ashore or were rescued, police said at least 20 people are missing.
In April 2021, at least 34 people died after an overcrowded ferry collided with a cargo vessel and sank outside the capital, Dhaka.
