The Baltimore Orioles signed veteran outfielder Greg Allen to a one-year major league contract on Friday.
Allen, 32, last appeared in a major league game on Aug. 20, 2023, for the New York Yankees. He split 2024 between the Yankees' minor league system and the Mexican Pacific Winter League, and he played 61 games for the Chicago Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Iowa this season before he was released on Monday.
At Iowa, Allen batted .270 with six home runs, 32 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He spent time at all three outfield spots but has made more appearances in center field than anywhere else in his major league career.
The Orioles, in last place in the American League East, need all the help they can get after trading away a number of players at the July 31 deadline, including veteran center fielder Cedric Mullins, All-Star designated hitter/first baseman Ryan O'Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano.
In parts of seven seasons with Cleveland (2017-20), San Diego (2020), the Yankees (2021, 2023) and Pittsburgh (2022), Allen is a career .231 hitter with 11 homers, 31 doubles, 68 RBIs and 48 stolen bases over 304 games.
Allen played college baseball at San Diego State under the late baseball legend Tony Gwynn.
