World No. 6 Ben Shelton and No. 9 Alex de Minaur both survived opening-round tests at the Hamburg Open in Germany on Monday, winning in three sets over unseeded opponents.
Facing lucky loser Marcos Giron, second-seeded Shelton prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3) for his first win since capturing the title in Munich last month. As for de Minaur, the third seed, he rallied past four-time tour-level champion Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to snap a three-match skid.
Germans Daniel Altmaier and Yannick Hanfmann won their opening matches, as did Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic.
Geneva Open
Three-time major winner and home favorite Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland pulled off a third-set tiebreaker win to fend off lucky loser Raul Brancaccio of Italy 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5) in the opening round.
Wawrinka, 41, a wild-card entry and two-time winner at Geneva, became the oldest player with an ATP Tour victory on clay since Jimmy Connors in 1994. Elsewhere in the tournament, Greek wild card Stefanos Tsitsipas rebounded from squandering a 6-2 lead in a second-set tiebreak and converted his sixth match point to secure a 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory over unseeded Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Fifth-seeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech won his opening-round match, along with unseeded players Alex Michelsen, Edas Butvilas of Lithuania and Argentinians Mariano Navone and Francisco Comesana.
